Do I?
This is a question that is commonly asked especially amongst potential business owners or entrepreneurs.
Many business owners have this misconception that a detailed business plan is only necessary when seeking external funding from investors or pitching to venture capitalists.
False...
Because what they majorly fail to realize is that a business plan is firstly a focus tool, it then becomes a blueprint for the potential business owner.
They fail to realize that the simple act of committing your thoughts to paper can enable you acquire better understanding of the business and also chart specific courses of action that need to be taken in order to kickstart the business.
Here are a few reasons why you need a business plan:
1) Goal setting: A business plan can detail alternative future scenarios and set specific objectives and goals along with the strategy & resources required to achieve these goals.
2) Research: A detailed business plan makes you look at all the aspects of your potential business and forces you to research, dig deep and ultimately expose loopholes in your business strategy.
This would also enable you to understand your potential business and your target market a little better.
3) Specific Guidelines: Your business plan would also map out the needs it wants to fulfill, the strategy it would implement, the target customers, the ideal market, business models, marketing plans, operational strategy, financial plan and projections e.t.c which would in turn provide the business owner with a specific roadmap that could ensure success.
Although the financial planning aspect is a bit tricky simply because "you're no fortune teller"
Just outlining and forecasting the financial data enables you research on startup costs and other miscellaneous expenses for specific periods (6mon/Year)
And this would ultimately lead to better preparation by the business owner as it would put more things into perspective and therefore, there would be little or no suprises.
Overall a business plan is necessary because its a document that reflects your vision and how to turn that vision into reality.
